What Comes Standard
Here at Apex we exclusively use 12-gauge wrought iron for all of our doors and jambs. This is the thickest in the industry (.1046″ and weighing 4.27lbs per square foot). 12-gauge wrought iron is 40% heavier and thicker than 14-gauge iron and 75% thicker and heavier than 16-gauge. Because of this, a 12-gauge door is much stronger and less susceptible to damage or the effects of weather.
- 5/8″ scrollwork
- Doors are 2″ thick, pre-hung and tested for quality assurance.
- Doors and jambs come completely insulated with a polyurethane, closed cell foam in all cavities.
- Heavy duty foam weather-stripping.
- Zinc galvanizing with 14 step epoxy finish.
- Heavy duty, ball bearing hinges rated at 1000lbs each.
- 3/4″ tempered, argon gas insulated, double pane glass.
- Unless requested otherwise, all glass is fully operable (opens) for ventilation and ease of cleaning.
- All doors come with American Standard boring unless otherwise requested.
Upgrades
Below are the upgrades you can add when customizing your iron door.
Thermal Barrier
Our thermal barrier technology was developed and patented in Switzerland where it has been used for and proven highly effective against cold and heat transfer for many years. We provide, what we consider, to be the finest thermal barrier available anywhere.
This picture shows a cutaway view of our doors and jambs with the above mentioned thermal barrier. You can clearly see the two fiberglass layers that run through the center, completely disrupting the metal on metal contact and eliminating temperature transfer.
U & R Values
U-Values of .41 or higher do not pass code in many building districts. In those areas U-Values must be lower than .32.
The lower the U-Value the better. Other company’s U-Values are typically .41 whereas ours is .27 (52% better).
For R-Values, the higher the better. Other company’s R-Values are typically 2.44 whereas ours is 3.70 (52% better).
The map below displays ‘frost areas’ by state. The blue shading indicates regions classified as cold climates, which commonly endure more intense winters.

Magnetic Stainless Steel Screen
Magnetic, stainless steel screens are available for all doors with operable glass. The screens are easily installed between the glass and scrollwork, and can be removed and stored when not needed. Unlike standard window screens, ours have a heavy duty frame that is color matched to your door.
Low-E Glass
Low-E glass is basically regular glass with a super thin, invisible coating that acts like a heat shield for your home. In the summer, it reflects heat from the sun back outside, keeping you cooler. In the winter, it reflects interior heat back in, making your space cozy. This special coating allows most sunlight to pass through, so you still get natural light without the unwanted heat gain or loss.
Impact Glass
Impact glass is a super-strong glass designed to shrug off heavy blows, like stray branches, hurled objects, or even attempted break-ins. Made by fusing layers of tempered glass with a resilient inner layer, it prevents shattering and keeps the interior secure. So if you value peace of mind and ultimate protection, impact glass is your shield against the unexpected.
Reflective Glass
Reflective glass looks like a mirror when viewed from the outside of your home during the day. From the inside looking out, the glass looks tinted. However, at night the glass will look tinted from either side.
Hurricane Package
Our hurricane package includes impact glass, heavy duty surface bolts, extra mounting tabs on the jamb, and extra hinges for doors and operable windows.
Please note: If you are in a hurricane zone and require a hurricane package and/or impact glass, it is your responsibility to inform us prior to the build.
